If you are going to work in London you will almost certainly need to open a UK bank account. The main high street banks all offer a very similar service: a general bank account is known as a “current account”. This will enable you to deposit and withdraw money from the bank and ATM/cash machines.
Most employers will pay you directly into your account, although some might give you a check. Clearance time can vary quite a lot between banks with some checks clearing the same day and other banks taking up to 7 working days. If you are going to be paid by check and you need your money straightaway make sure and deposit it with a bank that will clear the funds quickly.
To open a UK Bank account you will need to prove who you are and where you live. The most commonly excepted form ID is your passport, some banks may also accept a driving licence. Proof of address is also required in the form of a utility bill (Phone, Gas, Electricity etc) This can be a bit difficult especially if you have just arrived.
Yazabo Tip: If you have moved into a shared rental accommodation you can request that your name be added onto the bill, some companies will charge a small fee for doing this, you can then ask for them to send you a bill. This is one way to prove your address.
Don’t worry if you have just arrived and have no proof of address. Banks understand it can be difficult for you and most UK high street banks have special departments and will accept the following: Tenancy agreement, A letter from your employer, A pay slip.
Due to security, if you apply on line, two or more proofs of address and ID are required. Once all your documents have been verified, your application should take no ore than 3-7 working days.
Unless you are depositing a very large sum of money most banks will issue you with a basic “currant account" to start off with. This will include a card to withdraw money from cash machines. Once money starts going in to your account; you may be able to upgrade, in order to get overdrafts and other facilities, as well as apply for a credit or debit card.
