Dulwich Picture Gallery’s old master paintings were originally assembled as a national collection for the King of Poland in the 1790s. But Poland was partitioned and the king deposed, leaving two London art dealers with a royal collection on their hands. They commissioned Sir John Soane to build a home for the paintings “in the clean air of Dulwich.” In 1817, it opened as England’s first public art gallery and has been an inspiration to architects ever since. The collection is a comprehensive guide to European painting in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, including works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Canaletto, Van Dyck, Poussin, Gainsborough and Murillo. The Gallery is also famous for its series of critically acclaimed loan exhibitions, making it an important part of London’s art scene.
Now on display: Sickert in Venice, 4 March – 31 May.
Sickert first visited Venice in the Autumn of 1895, returning repeatedly. Venice inspired some of Sickert’s most ravishing Impressionist work. It was here that Sickert really found his identity as an artist, painting Venice under different lighting conditions, inspired by Monet. This is the first time that Sickert’s magical Venetian output has been seen together |
